Self-Help Center, Inc.June 20, 2008
Incorporated in 1978, the Self-Help Center, Inc. (SHC) is a private non-profit agency dedicated
to providing support and services to victims of domestic violence, child abuse, stalking, and
sexual assault. Our mission is to provide 24-hour crisis-intervention, emergency safe house,
and comprehensive supportive services to abuse victims; and to reduce future cycles of violence.
Over the years SHC has grown to develop a comprehensive approach towards helping victims' and
their children heal beyond their immediate crisis. While immediate responses are certainly
critical in stabilizing and providing immediate safety to the victim and her children, SHC also
focuses programming on their longer term needs, such as emotional stability and financial security.
To meet this end, SHC implemented Turing Point transitional housing where homeless victims and
their families may live. While at Turning Point, women and youth learn conflict resolutions and
problem solving skills, and the parents learn positive parenting, goal-setting, financial management,
self-defense, self-sufficiency and other life skills.
As appropriate, parents may also participate in on-site drug treatment and relapse prevention
programs. Victim support and educational groups for youth and adults are ongoing. Staff is
dedicated to eliminating abuse and violence in relationships. Abuser's re-education is offered
to offenders at a treatment facility were offenders may reside. Prevention-education and recovery
programs are offered to the general public and specifically for at-risk youth. Our overall purpose
is to facilitate the recovery of victims, and to prevent future abuse and violence within our
families and society.
